Son of President ShinRa, Rufus was Vice-President until the sudden death of his
father at the hands of Sephiroth. Rufus was then promoted to President of ShinRa
Inc., and immediately made clear his desire to rule by fear rather than money. He
pursued Sephiroth in an attempt to find the Promised Land -- a journey that led
him to face down the Diamond Weapon as it tried to destroy Midgar. The Weapon shot
a powerful blast that destroyed the ShinRa tower, but Rufus survived due to timely
rescue by paramedics.
Two years after FFVII, Rufus was infected by Geostigma and received treatment at
the Healin Lodge, his sores covered by bandages (although in a wheelchair, Rufus
was able to walk and only confined himself to it as part of his "performance").
He attained Jenova's head from the Northern Crater, and sought Cloud's services
as a bodyguard to protect it from Kadaj, Yazoo and Loz. His request was turned down,
and Rufus was later kidnapped by Kadaj, which led to a showdown between the two.
